Geropsychiatric nurse specialists perform physical
examinations and psychiatric assessments of elderly patients.
They work with an interdisciplinary team concerned with the
needs, particularly the mental health needs, of the elderly.
Geropsychiatric nurse specialists work under the supervision of
the patient’s physician or psychiatrist.
These registered nurses work with individuals and families to
assess mental health needs, develop a nursing diagnosis, and
create a plan of nursing care. They implement the plan and
evaluate the nursing care.
Geropsychiatric nursing practice is characterized by
interventions that promote and foster both health and mental
health, assist clients to regain or improve their coping skills
or abilities, and prevent further disability.
